Exploring the Wild Wonders of West Virginia: A Road Trip Adventure

If you’re seeking a scenic, adventure-filled road trip, West Virginia offers an experience that combines waterfalls, state parks, historic sites, and epic outdoor activities. Our recent trip through the Mountain State was filled with breathtaking views, quaint small towns, and plenty of fun along the way. Here’s a look at our unforgettable West Virginia road trip, following this well-rounded itinerary.

Day 1: Waterfalls and Adventure at New River Gorge

We began our journey arriving at the West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) before hitting the road, taking the scenic Cheylan Exit 85 onto Route 60. This route took us along the stunning West Virginia Waterfall Trail, offering two perfect stops: Kanawha Falls and Cathedral Falls. Be sure to download the West Virginia Waterfall Trail Passport before you go to keep track of the falls you visit!

After soaking in the beauty of these cascades, we made our way to Adventures on the Gorge, an outdoor adventure resort nestled in the heart of the New River Gorge National Park. Our accommodation for the night was a cozy Outback Cabin, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.

Dinner was a delight at Pies and Pints, a local favorite in Fayetteville. Their signature pizzas, local brews, and laid-back atmosphere were the ideal end to a busy travel day. We even managed to squeeze in an evening hike, enjoying the sunset and stargazing in New River Gorge, a perfect blend of serenity and adventure.

Day 2: Sunrise, Waterfalls, and Jetboats

Day two kicked off with an early start as we headed to Hawks Nest State Park to catch a stunning sunrise from the Main Overlook. The view of the New River winding through the gorge below was an incredible way to start the day.

We grabbed breakfast at Gran Robbies, a cozy spot in Ansted, and then hit the Hawks Nest Rail Trail for a peaceful hike to Mill Creek Falls. This easy 1.8-mile trail led us to the New River Jetboat tour, where we got up close and personal with the river’s rapids and stunning rock formations.

Next, we ventured to Babcock State Park, where we explored several beautiful waterfalls, including Flanagan BranchSugar Camp RunMann’s Creek, and the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill Falls. With a packed lunch in hand, we spent the afternoon hiking and enjoying the pristine beauty of West Virginia’s natural landscape.

The day ended with a thrilling BridgeWalk along the New River Gorge Bridge. Walking the catwalk 850 feet above the river is not for the faint-hearted, but the views are worth it! Afterward, we indulged in dinner at Secret Sandwich Society, where gourmet sandwiches and friendly service made for a memorable meal. We ended the day by checking into the Cabins at Pine Haven for a well-earned rest.

Day 3: Caverns, Lewisburg, and Hidden Gems

We started the day with another early sunrise, this time at Grandview in the New River Gorge. After taking in the sights, we set off for Lewisburg, one of West Virginia’s most charming small towns. The Wild Bean provided the perfect spot for coffee and breakfast before we headed off to explore Lost World Caverns. These caverns are self-guided, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace, marveling at the ancient stalactites and stalagmites.

If you have extra time, the Hokes Mill Covered Bridge and Greenbrier River Trail are both beautiful spots nearby that offer a glimpse into the state’s rich history. We wrapped up the day with lunch at The Humble Tomato before heading to the Guest House in Hinton, a charming inn with a vintage feel. The evening was capped off with a visit to Sandstone Falls for a quiet, relaxing end to another full day.

Day 4: Exploring Beckley and Departing

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at The Guest House before heading to Beckley for a tour of the Exhibition Coal Mine, where we learned about the state’s coal mining history. After a quick stop at the quirky Chocolate Moose, we finished the adventure with a visit to Piney Creek Preserve, hiking the Waterfall Hollow Trail to see Cranberry Creek Cascades and Little White Stick Falls.

Before heading to the airport, we made a stop at the Tamarack Marketplace, where we enjoyed local arts, crafts, and a final taste of West Virginia’s cuisine.
